Vi consiglio questo interessante libro scritto da Hank Bordowitz, con ragionamenti approfonditi su certi aspetti oscuri (mica tanto...) della discografia. Mi pare sia del 2007, quindi è aggiornato ma non aggiornatissimo.

Spesso i lavori migliori arrivano agli esordi, i My Bloody Valentine invece sono un caso opposto. Ci hanno messo anni prima di tirare fuori l'opera suprema, per poi abbandonare la scena subito dopo. Una storia unica, per una band unica, capace di nascondere le melodie più sognanti sotto più strati di rumore, creando un vortice psichedelico senza via di uscita. Ci ho messo un po per valutare i dischi degli 883, un po' perchè la componente "soggettiva/vecchi ricordi" rischiava di prendere il sopravvento. Dopo tutto chi è nato fra il 1975 e il 1985 non può non essere cresciuto con le loro canzoni. Canzoni per pre-adolescenti dunque?? Alcune probabilmente sì, ma a ben vedere buona parte dei testi (soprattutto quelli della prima parte di carriera) trattavano di argomenti da ventenni.

Le cose migliori degli 883 rimangono sicuramente quei brani che appartengono alle due categorie: "storie da sabato sera" raccontate come se si fosse fra amici e "malinconia del trentenne che guarda al passato". In quest'ultima categoria rientra il loro brano-capolavoro, ovvero "Gli Anni". Il più grande problema degli 883 è che all'interno dei loro dischi c'era questa alternanza fra brani più che buoni e boiate di serie zeta (cose come "Tieni il Tempo", "Musica" o "La regina del Celebrità" per intenderci).

Difficile credere che fra qualche anno saranno da rivalutare gli ascolti tipici dei tredicenni di oggi, negli 883 c'era sostanza, a volte fin troppo nascosta, ma c'era. E poi un conto è creare un fenomeno generazionale da milioni di copie, un conto ed essere seguiti solamente da chi guarda TRL...

I primi hanno appena pubblicato The Suburbs, ottimo disco, vario... forse un po' troppo lungo e per certi versi più anonimo di un "Funeral", ma ancora una grande prova. I secondi hanno appena rilasciato il singolo "The Catalyst", pezzo tremendo, veramente insulso, che li fa continuare nella loro discesa negli abissi (e non è che fossero partiti da altezze siderali...)
